At the request of CDI Marine Chemical member companies, CDI established a dedicated working group to develop and produce its new “Alternative Energy & Power Supply” (AEPS) Questionnaire.

Objectives

The following are the key objectives:
1. To incorporate alternative marine fuels and power sources into the ongoing development of the CDI Marine Ship Inspection Report (SIR).
2. To support CDI stakeholders, participants, and vessel operators in managing the risks associated with emerging fuels and power technologies through CDI's marine inspection programme.
3. To contribute to the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) objective of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within the shipping industry.
4. To identify ways in which CDI can support the IMO transition and assist participants and vessel operators through its inspection framework.
5. To develop rapid-response inspection protocols covering alternative fuels and power sources as they emerge.
6. To evaluate options for incorporating these protocols into the existing CDI 10th Edition Ship Inspection Report (SIR).

Development of the AEPS Questionnaire

Working in close collaboration with CDI stakeholders, CDI has developed a comprehensive AEPS inspection protocol and supporting Guidance Notes (GN) covering a range of alternative fuels and energy sources.
The AEPS questionnaire is designed to ensure the continued provision of high-quality marine assurance information, addressing the risks associated with these technologies in the following key areas:

• Personal safety
• Personal protective equipment and practices
• Operational safety
• Crew competency and training
• Environmental protection, health, and safety
• Certification and compliance
• Firefighting and emergency response

New AEPS Chapters in the 10th Edition Ship Inspection Report (SIR)

The AEPS questionnaire introduces the following new chapters to the existing 10th Edition Ship Inspection Report (SIR)

• Chapter 15 – Marine Biofuels
• Chapter 16 – Methanol and Ethanol as Fuel
• Chapter 17 – Ammonia as Fuel
• Chapter 18 – LPG as Fuel
• Chapter 19 – LNG as Fuel
• Chapter 20 – Wind Assisted Propulsion Systems (WAPS)
• Chapter 21 – Onshore Power Supply (OPS)
• Chapter 22 – Fuel Cells
• Chapter 23 – Shaft Power Limitation (ShaPoLi) and Engine Power Limitation (EPL) Systems
• Chapter 24 – Onboard Carbon Capture (OCC)

Integration with the CDI Ship Inspection Report

The new AEPS chapters (15-24) will become an integral part of the existing 10th Edition Ship Inspection Report (SIR), with associated updates to section and question numbering.

The AEPS content will be incorporated into:
• The full CDI Ship Inspection Report (SIR)
• The CDI Marine Report Editor Inspector software
• The CDI Marine database

These changes will apply to all vessel types and Marine inspection types currently covered by CDI.
Availability and Launch

CDI will shortly release PDF versions of the AEPS questionnaire, next week, which will be available for download from the CDI website.

The official launch of CDI’s “ Alternative Energy & Power Supply” (AEPS) Questionnaire is scheduled for Monday 14th December 2026
