CDI Launching “Liquid Carbon Dioxide (LCO2) Vessel” - Ship Inspection Program

CDI is Launching Ground-breaking “Liquid Carbon Dioxide (LCO2) Vessel” - Ship Inspection Program

The Stichting Chemical Distribution Institute (CDI) is proud to announce the launch of its innovative Liquid Carbon Dioxide (LCO2) Vessel, Inspection Program; a pioneering initiative aimed at ensuring the safe and sustainable transport of LCO2 onboard specialised ships designed to transport reclaimed liquefied carbon dioxide for carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects.

- This new program will go live on the 12th November 2025

As global efforts intensify to combat climate change, the industry is increasingly turning to carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies to reduce emissions from sectors that are slower to decarbonise.

The safe and efficient transport of Liquefied CO2 by maritime vessels is a critical component of this strategy.

CDI’s new inspection program sets a benchmark for vessel integrity, operational safety, and environmental stewardship in this emerging sector.
Key Features of the LCO2 Ship Inspection Program:

• Specialised Inspection Protocols tailored to the unique properties and handling requirements of LCO2.
• Enhanced Safety Standards aligned with international regulations and industry practices.
• Environmental Risk Assessments to ensure minimal ecological impact during transport.
• Digital Reporting Tools for streamlined data collection and transparency.

CDI’s Chairman of the Board (Capt Jan Antonsson) said
“I am very pleased with CDI’s development of this new inspection program for these vessel types, carrying cargoes that present unique risks and require its unique controls. I would like to thank CDI staff and its Technical Committee developing this program so effectively, evolving from the latest CDI-M questionnaire, updating its system and process, and training qualified CDI inspectors in its use. Its launch offers CDI participants an industry-leading program for management of maritime risk when using these vessel types in their energy transition journey.”

CDI’s General Manager (Capt Howard Snaith) said

“This CDI program represents a significant step forward in supporting the maritime industry’s transition to low-carbon operations. By establishing rigorous inspection standards for LCO2 carriers, CDI is helping to build trust, safety, and accountability in a rapidly evolving field.”

The LCO2 Ship Inspection Program will be launched on the 12th of November 2025 and will be available to CDI members and stakeholders involved in the operation and chartering of specialised vessels transporting Liquefied Carbon Dioxide.
